BG Thistle Bonding Coat
Size: 25kg
The BG Thistle Bonding Coat is a high-performance undercoat plaster designed for use on smooth, low-suction backgrounds such as concrete, engineering bricks, or painted surfaces. This product is part of British Gypsum's Thistle range, specifically formulated to provide an optimal key or bonding layer that promotes adhesion when applying subsequent layers of finish plaster.
Key Features and Composition
-
Adhesion Enhancement: The Bonding Coat is engineered with enhanced adhesion properties, making it ideal for difficult surfaces where standard plasters would struggle to adhere effectively. It incorporates additives that improve its grip, ensuring a strong bond between the substrate and the final plaster layer.
-
High Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of substrates, including dense concrete blocks, smooth plasterboard, and other low-porosity materials. This versatility makes it a go-to solution for plastering professionals working with challenging surfaces.
-
Setting Time: Thistle Bonding Coat typically offers a setting time of around 2 hours, though this can vary depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. This allows ample time for application and leveling, while still ensuring a relatively quick turnaround for subsequent layers.
-
Thickness: It can be applied in layers up to 11mm thick, providing the flexibility needed to level uneven surfaces or cover imperfections in the underlying substrate. For deeper fills, the plaster can be applied in multiple layers.
-
Surface Texture: Once applied, the plaster provides a slightly coarse texture, which is ideal for keying in a final skim coat of finishing plaster like Thistle MultiFinish. This roughness is crucial for ensuring that the final layer of plaster bonds well, reducing the risk of delamination or cracking over time.
Application Process
-
Preparation: Before applying the BG Thistle Bonding Coat, the surface should be cleaned and free from dust, grease, or loose material. While it's designed for low-suction surfaces, pre-treating very smooth or high-density surfaces with a bonding agent or primer is often recommended to further enhance adhesion.
-
Mixing: The plaster comes as a dry powder, typically in 25kg bags, and should be mixed with clean water to a thick, creamy consistency. Care should be taken to avoid adding too much water, as this can weaken the plaster and reduce its bonding capabilities.
-
Application: Using a hawk and trowel, the mixed plaster is applied to the wall in a sweeping motion. It should be pressed firmly into the surface to ensure maximum contact and bonding. After the initial application, the plaster can be leveled with a straight edge or darby to ensure a flat, even coat.
-
Finishing: Once the bonding coat has partially set but is still slightly workable, it can be scratched with a plasterer's comb or notched trowel to create a key for the finish coat. After the bonding coat has fully set, usually within 24 hours, it can be overcoated with a finishing plaster such as Thistle MultiFinish or a similar product.
Benefits
-
Time and Cost Efficiency: By providing a strong adhesion layer, BG Thistle Bonding Coat reduces the need for additional preparatory work, saving time and material costs on the job.
-
Durability: When applied correctly, this plaster provides a durable base layer that significantly enhances the longevity and integrity of the final plaster finish. It is resistant to cracking and delamination, ensuring a long-lasting finish.
-
Ease of Use: Its manageable setting time and ease of application make it a preferred choice for both professional plasterers and DIY enthusiasts.
Applications
The BG Thistle Bonding Coat is ideal for use in both residential and commercial projects where smooth, low-absorption surfaces need to be plastered. It's commonly used in renovations of older buildings where the original substrates are dense and non-porous, as well as in new construction where modern building materials like concrete blocks are prevalent.
In summary, the BG Thistle Bonding Coat is a crucial material in the plastering process, providing a reliable, strong, and adhesive undercoat for a variety of challenging surfaces. Its use ensures that the final finish is smooth, durable, and aesthetically pleasing.
